We are expanding our outreach and reporting on toxic military bases. We’re looking to add several reporters and contributors that want to dig deep and deliver hard-hitting stories that make news.
We’re looking for someone who:
* Has a track record of aggressive reporting and landing revelatory stories about military base contamination, environmental negligence and the pursuit of justice and accountability.
* Is driven to deliver powerful storytelling that hits home
* Is truly excited about all the possible ways we can do journalism nowadays: from deep data-digging, to working with readers, to marrying narrative and investigative forms
* Willing to work remotely, on a volunteer basis, in support of a collaborative team to start. Add your talent to the team!
We know there are great candidates who won’t fit everything we’ve described above, or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
What you should send us:
The most important part by far is your past work (or current work if you wish to be added as a contributor). We’d also ask that you to submit a brief memo that describes which topics you most want to report on for Civilian Exposure. Lay out a project, a base, a contamination issue, a legal issue, or other relevant angle you think we should explore. Share with us how YOU would execute that project. What might specific stories be? How should they be told? How would you imagine achieving impact? How could you effect real change through your writing? Show us how you think.
If all of this sounds exciting to you, apply using the form at the bottom of the page. Please indicate “Reporter / Contributor” in the Job Interest field.
The jobs are volunteer to start, with full byline recognition and active promotion of your work. We require at least 2-3 stories per month (but we’ll welcome as many as you want to crank out, of course!). We are based in North Carolina, but are fully staffed by a team of hard-working, remote-working contributors and volunteers. We just expect you to be engaged with us on our occasional phone conferences or email discussions as we collaborate to drive the mission and outreach.
Note: We are especially interested in hearing from those of you who are either 1) advocates/leaders of specific military contamination issues in your area/region, or 2) a current journalist already actively researching/writing about this issue and willing to contribute your articles for publication or reprint.
