Editorial Independence Policy
We subscribe to standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News:
Our organization retains full authority over editorial content to protect the best journalistic and business interests of our organization. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.
We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support.
Our organization may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics, but our organization maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.
Our organization will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. We will accept anonymous donations for general support only if it is clear that sufficient safeguards have been put into place that the expenditure of that donation is made independently by our organization and in compliance with INN’s Membership Standards.
Types of Donations
Online Donations: Online donations can be made in honor of or in memory of an individual or organization. You may specify a Civilian Exposure program to contribute 100% of your gift. If you choose not to designate a program, we will use the gift where it is needed most.
Mail-In Donations: To mail in your donation, please contact us and we will provide our print-friendly form and address.
Memorials & Honorariums: Civilian Exposure welcomes donations made in honor or in memory of a loved one. You can choose to support us in lieu of gifts on a special occasion, or have memorial donations given instead of flowers. If you wish to make your memorial or honorary donation online, please donate online and include a dedication memo. If you wish to mail in your memorial or honorary donation, please add a note fill out the “acknowledgement” section on the printable mail in donation form.
Civilian Exposure will notify the family or individual of your online or mailed-in gift provided that contact information is included with the donation. If you have any questions please contact us through our online contact form.
When making a memorial donation to Civilian Exposure, please make your check payable to “Civilian Exposure”. If posting our address for an obituary requesting donations to be sent to Civilian Exposure, please contact us for address details.
Corporate Giving: Civilian Exposure welcomes inquiries from companies who support our mission of building awareness, accountability and assistance for people exposed to contamination aboard U.S. military installations. We can work with you and your business regarding fundraisers, matching campaigns, employee giving opportunities, and broader donations. Click to learn more.
Wills, Trusts & Life Insurance: Bequests are donations that are made through a will or a living trust. You can donate to Civilian Exposure through your estate planning by naming Civilian Exposure in your will for a specific amount or a percentage share in your estate. Another option is to name Civilian Exposure as the beneficiary of your estate after the payment of bequests to others. The process is very simple for most bequests. Civilian Exposure suggests consulting a legal professional before drafting a will.
Another way to donate to Civilian Exposure is to name our organization as the beneficiary of an existing or new life insurance plan. This is a low-cost option, and your premium payments may be tax-deductible. Civilian Exposure must be named as the owner and beneficiary of the insurance policy for it to be tax-deductible.

Matching Gifts: Many companies have programs that permit employees to donate to the charities of their choice, and match the employees’ contribution on a one-to-one or greater basis. Please check with your employer to see if there is a matching gift program for employees. Normally, employees provide proof to their employer of their contribution, and the company contacts Civilian Exposure, requesting that we complete a matching gift form they provide.
Most companies will ask for the federal tax identification for the charity. For Civilian Exposure, our Federal Taxpayer ID is #47-1383216.
Donor Transparency
We are committed to transparency in every aspect of funding our organization.
Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services or opinions.
We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to help with our general operations, coverage of specific topics, and special projects. Our news judgments are made independently – not based on or influenced by donors. We do not give supporters the rights to assign, review or edit content.
We will make public all donors who give $5000 or more per year. As a nonprofit, we will avoid accepting donations from anonymous sources, and we will not accept donations from government entities, political parties, elected officials or candidates actively seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
