Yet another article in the past month or two regarding yet another military base in need of a clean up. At Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire, the EPA has uncovered that perflourooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) was found in wells at Pease in May 2014.
The city closed the Haven well at Pease International Tradeport after the Air Force tested the well and found levels of PFOS 12.5 times higher than the EPA’s Provisional Health Advisory (PHA). PFOS and PFOA are a class of chemicals known as PFCs, or perfluorochemicals. This is the third base making news in the past month for findings of PFCs in well water supplies.
The U.S. Air Force confirmed recently that it will “comply with an Environmental Protection Agency order” to clean up contaminated water.
“The Air Force is committed to the protection of human health and the environment in connection with releases or potential releases of perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate at Pease,” said Mark Correll, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for Environment, Safety and Infrastructure.
“Protecting the health and safety of the Portsmouth community is our top priority,” he said.
We’ll see.

Has anyone looked at the Fort Ord, contaminants (TCE, PCE, Benzene, Carbon Tetrachloride, etc.) and the cleanup program, which is still not complete after over 25 years?
Hi Dean,
We’re taking a look at Fort Ord and will have a report coming soon on what we can dig up.
