Eareckson Air Station, formerly known as Shemya Air Force Base, is located on the island of Shemya, Alaska. The base was also referred to as “The Black Pearl” or “The Rock.” It is the most westerly of the 11th Air Force bases and is located approximately 1,500 miles from Anchorage near the tip of the Aleutian Island chain. Shemya Island is actually part of a National Wildlife Refuge – the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.

Today, however, we want to pause and use this upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend as a moment to remember and recognize all of our service members, as well as the civilian workers, families and citizens that support their efforts to protect this great nation.

A new base has popped up on the radar lately for various contamination issues – Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. According to recent reports, the base covered up information about extensive contamination and over a half dozen surrounding communities may be impacted as a result. When Civilian Exposure was established in 2013, our initial primary focus was on the water contamination and soil vapor intrusion issues at Camp Lejeune, NC. The base was the largest contaminated base on the EPA Superfund site list, so it has become a flagship of sorts for this issue. That said, there are over 150 military installations actively listed on the EPA Superfund list today. Those communities need answers and support as well. We’re expanding our coverage to include these communities and base issues nationwide.
